Lent – Day 24

Doing *Your* Thing

body-of-christWhat is your thing? What is your gift/talent, or your passion? What one thing are you better at than everyone else in the world? This is no time to put yourself down (oh, I’m rubbish at pretty much everything) – be really honest with yourself.

Let’s try asking it a slightly different way. If you had to spend the rest of your life doing just one thing, what would that be? Now hold that thought for a minute…

You’ve probably answered that completely differently than everyone else. And that’s fine, because we’re all different, and yet we all have our place to fill. You were created by God & you have been placed where you are with a purpose in mind. There will never be another you – so it’s about time you step up and fill the role with confidence.

The Apostle Paul describes the church as being like a body with many parts, but the many parts make up the whole. He says that each part has it’s own function, and in order for the body to be healthy every part needs to fulfil its purpose. The same is true with the church. For the church to function properly, we each need to play our part & fulfil the purpose we’ve been given. For one reason or another you might not feel like you’re a very important part of the church. If that’s how you feel, hear what Paul has to say to you:

‘But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. […] In fact, some parts of the body that seemweakest and least important are actually the most necessary.’ – 1 Corinthians 12:18, 22 NLT [emphasis added]

He says that you’re exactly where God wants you to be, and even if you don’t feel important, and even if others don’t treat you like you’re very important, that doesn’t change your place in the body and how vital it is that you step up and fulfil your purpose. But we need to find out what our purpose is in order to take our place. So back to the earlier question about your talents, gifts & passions. If you had to spend the rest of your life doing one thing, what would it be?

Find a way of doing that for God. That might be within the church, or your family, or as a job – but if that’s what you are passionate about, then that’s a reflection of how God created you and what He created you for. Find a way to do that for God… Pray about it and ask Him. Find a trusted friend or family member and talk it through.

Reflect:
– what am I better at or more passionate about than everyone else?
– how can I use that passion and/or gift to serve God?
– who can I speak to and pray with about it?

Pray:
Father God, you created me with a purpose in mind,
Please help me to find out what that is.
Lord Jesus, help me find my place in the church and know I’m valued in it.
Holy Spirit, give me a heart to serve you always.
