Lent – Day 46

Hopeless Saturday…

no-hopeToday is the end of Lent. What a day to end on. All hope is lost. But just because it’s the final day, and because everything is so hopeless, don’t rush through it. Because today prepares us for tomorrow.

For a minute, put yourself in the disciples’ position. We look at the story with the knowledge & certainly of Jesus’ resurrection. They lived it in real time – the only certainty they had at this point on that Saturday, between the empty cross at the end of Good Friday & the empty tomb on Sunday morning, is that Jesus, their teacher & friend is dead, and their lives are in danger because they are were His friends. Everything else that they dreamed about and thought they knew, was blown apart. Hearts broken & lives shattered.

Here In Between- Brian Moss

Here in between the death and life
Of broken God and risen Christ
We watch and wait, we kneel and pray
For hope to breathe at break of day
The temple torn by sacrifice
How can this be the way?

The Son of God nailed to a tree
This is not how we thought it’d be
Your condemnation makes no sense
An act of hate and violence
We broke the bread and spilled the wine
How can this be the way?

Within this day of Sabbath rest-
A gift to those whom you have blessed-
Your peace transforms our hearts content
In this already and not yet
In stillness beats the drum of life
How can this be the way?

Your never-ending sovereignty
Still flickers with eternity
It brightens fading eventide
The gospel hums of mercy wide
Oh Lord of Life, open Your eyes
You are the only way.

Today prepares us for tomorrow. Today we feel lost, frustrated & hopeless. But tomorrow we experience joy like never before. Tomorrow we dance and sing and don’t care who’s watching. Because tomorrow presents us with the opportunity to be healed, made whole, restored. Tomorrow we can be made right with God. But don’t rush through today – because today prepares us for tomorrow.

Pray:
Father God, when I am in an ‘in between time’ in my life,
Remind me of this Holy Saturday – the frustration & hopelessness of the not quite yet
And remind me that you came through – that all which was promised was also fulfilled.
Lord Jesus, whatever we feel on this ‘in between day’,
Make us ever grateful that you endured it on our behalf, lost to death,
But with absolute confidence in the will of Your Father.
Holy Spirit, comfort us & reassure us;
And tomorrow, turn our frustration and hopelessness to joy and celebration!
